IPTV on Nvidia Shield and Xiaomi Mi Box: setup and tips

Two of the most popular Android TV boxes, two very different budgets. Here is how Klyvo Play will run on the Nvidia Shield and the Xiaomi Mi Box, and what to do until it lands on Google Play.

Can you watch IPTV on an Nvidia Shield or a Xiaomi Mi Box with Klyvo Play? Both boxes run Android TV, and the Klyvo Play app for Android TV has been submitted to Google Play: it is coming soon, not live yet. When it is, you will install it from Google Play on the Shield or the Mi Box like any other app, attach your playlist with the device codes, and get the full TV interface. Until then, a Fire TV Stick or an Apple TV, or your phone, tablet or Windows PC, lets you watch today. Below: how setup will work, what each box does well, and the settings that make IPTV smooth on them.

Klyvo Play is a player. It provides no channel, film or series: you connect the service you already have and are authorized to use, with its Xtream login or its M3U link.

Klyvo Play on Android TV boxes: where things stand

On Android TV, apps come from Google Play for TV, which only lists apps built for television. Klyvo Play's TV app — the same one already available on Fire TV and Apple TV — is waiting for its release on Google Play. The devices page shows the live status (Android TV and Google TV: coming soon), and the download page will link to the listing as soon as it is published. The full setup of the Android TV app is described in IPTV player for Android TV and Google TV.

Please do not install modified APK files found online to get around the wait. They are a common way to spread malware on TV boxes and can expose your login details. The official listing is the safe way.

IPTV on the Nvidia Shield: the high-end option

The Nvidia Shield has a reputation as one of the most capable Android TV boxes: plenty of processing power, a wired Ethernet port and smooth 4K playback. For an IPTV player, that means fast menus even with very large playlists, and comfortable headroom for demanding streams.

  • Use the Ethernet port. A cable is the most stable connection for live TV, especially sport.
  • 4K and HEVC: Klyvo Play's VLC-based engine plays HEVC/H.265, MKV and Dolby/DTS audio. Whether a channel is in 4K depends on your service and your connection — see IPTV in 4K, HDR and HEVC.
  • Multi-Live: on a box with plenty of memory, you can watch two live channels at once.

IPTV on the Xiaomi Mi Box: the budget favourite

The Xiaomi Mi Box family is popular because it is affordable and runs official Android TV with Google Play. It is less powerful than a Shield, with less memory, so a few habits help:

  • Let the app manage memory. On devices with less than 3 GB of memory, Klyvo Play switches to a lower-memory mode by itself, to stay smooth with large catalogues.
  • Organize the catalogue. Choosing up to three countries keeps the live section light; See all channels loads the full list only when you ask for it.
  • Check the network. Some boxes have no Ethernet port: place the box where Wi-Fi is strong, ideally on 5 GHz.
  • Restart now and then. Cheaper boxes run better after a restart, especially if they stay on standby for weeks.

Shield or Mi Box: which one for IPTV?

Both boxes will run the same Klyvo Play app, with the same features. The difference is comfort:

  • Choose the Shield if you watch a lot of live sport, have a very large playlist, want a wired connection, or plan to use Multi-Live every day.
  • Choose the Mi Box if you want an affordable box for one TV, mostly for live channels, films and series in HD, and your Wi-Fi is good where the TV stands.
  • Already own one? Keep it. Nothing in Klyvo Play requires the more expensive box; the app adapts to the memory it finds.

In every case, the quality of the picture depends first on your service and your Internet connection, not on the box. A powerful box will not turn an SD channel into 4K, and a modest one plays an HD stream perfectly if the line is stable. Spend on the network first — a good Wi-Fi spot or a cable — and on the box second.

How setup will work on the Shield and the Mi Box

  1. Open Google Play on the box, search for Klyvo Play and install it once it is live.
  2. Open the app and note the two codes on the welcome screen: the address in MAC format and the Device Key (not the box's real MAC address).
  3. Connect your source: type your Xtream login or M3U link with the remote — confirming each field moves to the next — or attach the playlist to the two codes on the client portal from your phone.
  4. Your library appears: live TV, TV guide, films and series.

Attaching the playlist on the portal is by far the easiest on a TV box: no long URL to type with the remote. See manage your playlists with your MAC address and Device Key.

The remote on Android TV boxes

  • OK opens, Back goes back one level; from the profile screen, Back sends the app to the background without disconnecting your line.
  • In films and series, Play/Pause pauses, and ⏪ / ⏩ jump 10 seconds.
  • On remotes that have them, CH+ / CH− switch channel, the number keys open a channel by number and INFO shows the programme.

What to use until the Android TV app is live

  • A Fire TV Stick or Fire TV Cube, on the Amazon Appstore.
  • An Apple TV, on the App Store.
  • An Android phone or tablet, on Google Play — the phone and tablet app is already available.
  • A Windows PC on the TV's HDMI input.

Troubleshooting on Android TV boxes

Most problems on a box are not specific to the Shield or the Mi Box. If menus feel slow, read slow IPTV on Android TV. If a channel freezes, run Settings → Connection & stream test to see whether your line handles 4K, HD or SD. If a file does not play, the engine supports most formats.

An empty or shifted TV guide is not a box problem either: the guide comes from your provider's panel, and can be completed with an XMLTV EPG link added to the playlist on the portal. Channels your provider gives no guide for stay empty, and wrong times usually come from the provider's own guide.
